The Animal Shelter of Linn County has been open since 2003. We have consistently adoped out or returned to owners between 80-90% of dogs and cats taken in annually. We have been officially designated as a "No-Kill Shelter" by the Best Friends association since 2023, though there have been many years before that in which we met their criteria for "No-Kill."
We are not part of any city, county, state, federal government or any other organization. We are financially dependent on fundraisers, donations and adoptions. The shelter's yearly budget is over $90,000.00, not counting service and goods donations. Of this amount, approximately $8,000.00 comes from $1.00 per citizen annual payment from the cities of Brookfield, Bucklin, Laclede, Marceline and Meadville. Most of the remaining $82,000.00 is raised by volunteers and individual donors.
We are licensed yearly under the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Our facility is inspected annually each year by a Department of Agriculture official to ensure that our animals have a safe and clean environment.
The Animal Shelter of Linn County is located a mile south of Brookfield on Highway 11. Full price adoption fees are $125 per dog and $40 per cat and include partial payment ($60 for dogs and $30 for cats) towards spay/neuter and rabies shots. Most veterinarians in Linn County charge a reduced fee for shelter animals, so adopter' cost for this would be minimal. We often have reduced adoption fees for senior dogs and cats and/or for those who came to the shelter already spayed/neutered as well as long-term residents. We love to have visitors whether you plan to volunteer, play with an animal or adopt an animal!
